The Best Trivia Card Games

As much as we hate to admit it, quizzes are fun. We love to test ourselves and prove what we know. Sometimes they can also be really hard and the satisfaction in answering correctly in these games is difficult to express. Everyone has fond (or not so fond) memories of trivial pursuit and collecting those wedges. One of the biggest problems with that board game is its play-time; Trivia Card Games solve that by being quick-paced, engaging, and enjoyable.

Trivia Card Games for Everyone

Trivia games are inherently hard and younger players might not know answers because they have just not been around long enough to leant it, but at least these games do not feature any crude content or jokes.

Linkee

Linkee is perhaps the best commercialized game on this list and while it can be played by children and families it does tend to err on the side of being a bit too difficult for youngsters. In this game each card has 4 questions, linked by a theme. As an example, let’s say the first two questions are: African animal in a pride, and 1940s animated children’s programme about two household adversaries. Now they are a bit tricky because I made them up on the spot, but the answers should be Lion and Tom and Jerry. The link here is Cats. In this case I would shout “Linkee” to attempt to gain a card.

Players win by gathering the question cards through a correct “Linkee” call, the cards they have must read “Linkee” to win. As discussed, there are 4 questions per card and so the more questions you answer the increasingly easier it is to guess correctly, but that is the same for your opponents too. Guessing earlier might secure you a card, but could also lead you to spinning out early.

Geek Gamer

Geek Gamer is a cute little trivia set. What stands out most is the box design: a retro gamepad – it looks really good. This card game is more of a small gift that you would buy someone as a bit of fun. It comes out as the cheapest on this list at $7.69 at the time of writing.

The box has around 100 questions, so significantly fewer than many on this list, but if you are a gamer you will be sure to enjoy it.

Blockbuster

The Blockbuster trivia card game is centred on films, as one would expect given the name which is synonymous with the now defunct rental chain (God bless their souls).

There are two different parts to this game. First, there is a head-to-head battle called “Movie Buzzer Battle” where one team must name more things about a category than the other, for example, films about robots. The second, “Triple Charades Jeopardy” sees you guessing movies using charades, quotes, or one word – I can only image charading Die Hard!

There’s also a touch of strategy thrown into this game, unlike many on this list. If you have three or more cards of a single genre in you collection, you can trade them in to steal a card from your opponent.

All things considered, this game is about the nostalgia factor: from the cassette box that the cards come in, the blockbuster sign in the parking lot, to the films themselves like Terminator. A great trivia card game for those movie buffs out there.

Top Trivia: The Ultimate Top Trivia Collection

The Top Trivia series has sub-games like Film and Television, General Knowledge, Music, and Sport. The Ultimate Top Trivia Collection compiles these all in one, 4500 question mammoth set. This game, quite literally, does what it says on the tin. You will be challenged in all sorts of way, from scratching your History brain, to 00s music hits, this basically has everything.

Ultimate is a fitting name because it encompasses so many categories. It may not do trivia as imaginatively or intuitively as some of the other trivia games on this list, but if you want a stack of questions to answer, this is your best bet.

Trivia Card Games for Adults

These Card games do discuss some naughtier points at times – parental discretion is advised! These games typically act more as ice-breakers than hardcore quizzing.

Things They Don’t Teach You At School

For many of us school was a long time ago with memories good and bad. I for one – as sad as it may sound – wish they had taught me about taxes at school because I still have no idea. The point is, there are a lot of things that we were not taught at school rightly or wrongly. This game seeks to remedy that by asking us 440 questions from the simple to the obscene.  An example of some questions might include:

  • “What does a tiger look like if you shaved off all its fur?”
  • “Why does the Mona Lisa have no eyebrows?
  • “Is it possible to Tattoo your tongue?”

I would say: “Cold”, “Fashionable”, and “Yes”, but that’s just a guess.

Questions range from curious to crude in a fun adult setting. The game markets itself as creative, original and informative and so certainly ticks the boxes for our trivia card games.

A Shot in the Dark

A Shot in the Dark describes itself as an Unorthodox Quiz game and truer words have never been said. The premise of this trivia game is that you do not and should not know the answers. You are rewarded for the closest answers to the question. An example might be: how many tins of paint to paint the white house? Of course, no one would know the answer to this and that’s where the problem solving element comes in.

The fact that nobody knows the answers in this game is a great way to level the playing field and so it becomes more of a problem solving exercise than straight out trivia regurgitation. It must be said though that some of the questions do seem answerable: “How long was Brittney Spears’ shortest marriage” will definitely be known by some mega Brittney fans out there!

5 Second Rule Uncensored

In 5 Second rule every round is, well, 5 seconds. Players are given a prompt and must give an answer some may be factual like name celebrities that have had law suits aginst them. Others might give the player a bit more freedom in answering, for example, “what not to do at a funeral”. Players then need to give 3 answers in that 5 second timeframe.

The game has around 300 questions, but does toe the line between trivia game and party game. It is a completely fair genre to be in, but if you are looking for an out and out trivia card game, this one does inject elements of fun along the way.

Concluding Trivia Card Games

It is hard to find the bridge between children and adult trivia card games, typically those aimed at families are a bit too easy for adults and the games aimed at adults are almost certainly too hard for young children. A lot of these games require quite deep knowledge, but others, like shot in the dark, require none at all. A lot of adult trivia card games have this party-game like feel, to act as icebreakers, where they make the questions fun and engaging – if not a bit crude. The best way to find out is to check it out for yourself!
